I recently returned from seven weeks in Europe. I completed two hikes totalling over 310km, and I credit my regular yoga practise with being able to do so.
I watched fellow hikers perform various stretches and the thought struck me. Why isn't what they're doing yoga?
Then I realised after a yoga session/sequence I feel calm and connected to my body.
A yoga instructor designs their class with a sequence in mind, where the practise flows from one body part to the other with a connection and focus on the breath as we move.
Anyone who has been to a gym or exercise class has perform targeted stretches. And many newcomers will recognise the stretch in their yoga class. But the essential difference is the breath and mindfulness in a yoga class.
Asana (the yoga moves) are traditionally performed to allow the practitioner to sit comfortably to meditate. Unfortunately in part due to the explosion of fantastic looking poses on Instagram, a lot of yoga participants have either forgotten or never knew this.
The marriage of breath and movement has a dramatic effect on the mind and body and is becoming scientifically recognised for the positive effects on stress, mental health, anxiety, cardiovascular health and the list goes on.
Yoga is so much more than stretching, although that feels fantastic as well. And of course depending on the style of yoga class it can be a good workout, but don't overlook or underestimate the benefits of the breath and mindfulness effects of yoga.
Be free to live your best life.
